Police officer exodus

Victoria Police has lost more than 2550 years of experience, with dozens of senior officers calling it quits in recent weeks

Victoria Police has lost more than 2550 years of experience, with dozens of senior officers calling it quits in recent weeks.

The figures are revealed in documents obtained by Channel 7 that show one superintendent, seven inspectors and seven senior sergeants were among top brass to leave the force since June. A further 18 sergeants and 43 leading constables are also included.

The resignations range from specialised units including intelligence, covert command and counter terrorism.

Police Association boss Wayne Gatt said the figures were concerning. "We've got a growing population. We've got increased work and we are losing police officers quicker than we are gaining them," he told 7 News.

"You simply cannot replace a member with 20-25 or greater years with somebody who has just marched out of the academy.

You actually have to pay to apply to join Victoria Police at a time where we are holding so many vacancies, we should wipe that clean."

"The number of police retirements recorded in June and July is in line with figures seen last year," a Victoria Police spokesman said. "

We just recorded the highest number of weekly police applications on record with 605 received in the week ending August 19
