Ron Iddles to retire in February 2017Our Secretary, Ron Iddles, has informed me of his decision to step down from his role and retire from policing altogether, in February next year.
His last day in the job will be on Friday February 24.
Ron advised me that his decision was not taken lightly but that he feels it would be an appropriate time for him to hand over the baton in 2017 – the Police Association’s centenary year.
He is also pleased to making this decision on his own terms while enjoying very good health and able to look forward to enjoying many of the things he hasn’t had time to do with his family.
While we’re disappointed to be losing someone of Ron’s calibre, we certainly can’t begrudge his decision and his reasons.
I take this opportunity on behalf of our Executive, Delegates and 14,500 members to pay tribute to Ron on his outstanding career achievements, both in his role as Police Association Secretary and over his 40-year career as a police officer.
Ron deserves every one of the many accolades he’s earned.
The Police Association has been fortunate to have him at the helm since April 2014. He led us through a successful EBA campaign last year, which has seen our members achieve well-deserved improvements to their terms and conditions of employment.
Ron’s many initiatives have also helped us develop into a more professional organisation while perhaps his signature legacy has been to thrust the issue of police mental health out in the open and onto the national policing agenda.
I’m confident that Ron’s leadership on this important issue has created a platform for further improvements in this area, not just for police in Victoria, but on a national level.
Ron’s staunch advocacy in highlighting the growing demands and challenges our members face in their job has also been exemplary.
Ron’s staunch advocacy in highlighting the growing demands and challenges our members face in their job has also been exemplary. When Ron retires in February next year, he will do so with the Association in very sound shape.
The Police Association Executive will soon commence a process to appoint a new Secretary to take over from Mr Iddles on 25 February 2017.
